Volunteers with Parkinson’s Needed to Try Out Therapeutic Mime Videos

Are you someone living with Parkinson’s, or are you a caretaker or partner looking for ways to engage in therapeutic activities? If so, there’s a unique opportunity you won’t want to miss. Barbara Salsberg Mathews, a Canadian artist and person with Parkinson’s, is inviting individuals with Parkinson’s to try out self-study therapeutic mime videos from her Mime Over Mind program. This is an exciting chance to participate in a groundbreaking study that could help others with Parkinson’s benefit from mindful, creative exercises.

What is the Mime Over Mind Program?

Barbara Salsberg Mathews has created the Mime Over Mind program, which features short, self-paced mime exercises designed to support mindfulness, movement, and self-expression for people with Parkinson's. As a person living with Parkinson’s herself, Barbara understands firsthand the challenges of daily life with this condition. Her goal with the Mime Over Mind program is to offer therapeutic, engaging activities that combine the arts with Parkinson’s care.

Barbara is looking for volunteers to participate in testing out these video exercises. Caretakers and partners are also welcome to join in, creating a unique opportunity for support and shared experience.

What’s Involved in the Study?

Participants in this study will be asked to view and practice six short mime videos from the Mime Over Mind program. Each video lasts between 2 to 6 minutes, and participants can go through the exercises at their own pace. After watching and practicing, volunteers will be asked to fill out a brief survey to share their experience.

There’s also the possibility of a follow-up telephone discussion to clarify any responses and to further explore your feedback. Your insights will help improve the program, ensuring it’s as useful and accessible as possible for others in the Parkinson’s community.

Timescales and Time Commitment

This is a flexible, self-paced study. Volunteers can start viewing the videos immediately, and the program runs until March 29. Each video is relatively short, and practicing each mime exercise should take around 10 to 20 minutes.

Afterward, volunteers will complete a follow-up survey, which should take about half an hour. It’s a small time commitment that could make a big difference in improving resources for others with Parkinson’s.

Benefits and Risks

By participating, you’ll be directly helping to refine a free resource for people with Parkinson’s. Your feedback will help Barbara and the team understand what works best for you, which can lead to improved therapeutic content for others who may benefit from it.

While the experience may bring some fun and enjoyment, it’s important to be aware of the potential risks. You may experience fatigue or distress during the exercises, and sharing feedback might sometimes bring up unexpected feelings. However, the program is designed to be mindful and supportive of your individual needs.
